Funktionsdesign® introduced in conjunction with the Noxum Publishing Studio at JURA Elektroapparate AG
Problems with the quality of translations? Production times too long when producing setting copies for operating instructions?
At JURA Elektroapparate AG, these problems have been confined to the past. Its use of the Noxum Publishing Studio as a way of coping with increasing editorial demands is paying dividends.
Würzburg, July 14, 2008 - Noxum GmbH, the specialist for content management and editorial systems, has successfully introduced the Noxum Publishing Studio at JURA Elektroapparate AG in record time. The company uses the content management system (CMS) to produce, manage, translate and publish operating manuals for its high-quality, fully automatic coffee machines. JURA regards its operating manuals not just as a classic set of technical instructions but also as a comprehensive source of user information for its premium appliances. Indeed, when flicking through the manuals, customers can learn a great deal about coffee and are given a range of suggestions for culinary applications.
Given the increasing number of different language versions and products, the previous editorial processes at JURA Elektroapparate AG were no longer up to the job. It was clear that the previous manual system for producing operating instructions was no longer able to cope with the rapidly growing demands. The company had previously produced its manuals in nine different languages using Adobe® InDesign® CS2. It had a manual translation management system, redundant data management and was unable to produce standardized layouts.
The need to compile content in a modular fashion as well as the facility to reuse content modules were what prompted JURA to introduce an XML-based content management system. At the same time, the Funktionsdesign® standardization method devised by Prof. Jürgen Muthig and Prof. Robert Schäflein-Armbruster was adopted, given that it is clearly suitable for information products such as operating manuals containing step-by-step directions.
The results have been very impressive indeed: "The editorial system introduced at Jura successfully uses the Funktionsdesign® method and offers a universal concept from the editorial process through to the final layout," said Dr. Alexander Mehling, a consultant at Noxum GmbH, in his assessment of the JURA and Noxum project team.
As far as the operating manuals are concerned, it will now be possible to improve the quality of the translations and react more quickly to translation needs. Foreign-language setting copies can now be produced at the push of a button. Thanks to Noxum's XML-based CMS, JURA can now produce Adobe® InDesign® documents semi-automatically and turn content components into layout components easily. Depending on the market requirements, the editorial team can choose between three different layouts at the point of publication.
"Our editorial team is now equipped with a system which will allow us to meet future editorial needs such as additional publication formats, languages and layout variants," said Matthias Rilk, technical editor at JURA Elektroapparate AG. "Working together with Noxum, we completed the project, from the system evaluation through to the successful implementation, in less than three months."
